トニー滝谷という名の男がいる。その名前そのものが、ある種の孤独を帯びている。戦後の東京で、ほぼ完全な孤立のなかで育った彼は、やがて愛する人と出会い、静かな幸福をそっと手にする。しかしそれは、唐突に奪われてしまう。残されたのは、服で埋め尽くされた部屋と、言葉にならない喪失だけだ。

村上春樹の短編小説を原作に、市川準監督が映像化した『トニー滝谷』は、日本映画史に静かに刻まれてきた傑作である。その映像、色調、音——すべてが精緻に設計されており、観るというより、浸るような体験をもたらす。イッセー尾形がトニーとその父・省三郎の一人二役を、宮沢りえが妻と、妻亡きあとに現れる女性の二役を演じる。坂本龍一によるピアノ音楽は、息をするように作品を満たしていく。

2005年の公開から21年。撮影監督・広川泰士の監修のもと、市川作品ならではの中間色——グレーのなかに感情が宿るあの色調——を精緻に再現した4Kリマスター版が、ついにスクリーンに帰還する。録音技師・橋本泰夫によるサウンドも、新たに4K版に対応した音響へと生まれ変わった。

第57回ロカルノ国際映画祭にて、審査員特別賞、国際批評家連盟賞（FIPRESCI賞）、ヤング審査員賞をトリプル受賞。

A man named Tony Takitani — the name itself a kind of loneliness — grows up in postwar Tokyo in almost perfect solitude. When he finally finds love, the quiet happiness it brings feels, for a time, like enough. Then it is taken from him. What remains are rooms full of clothes, and a grief too large to name.

Based on Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name, Jun Ichikawa’s Tony Takitani is one of the great quiet films of Japanese cinema — a work so precisely calibrated in image, color, and sound that it feels less watched than absorbed. Issey Ogata plays both Tony and his jazz-musician father; Rie Miyazawa plays both the wife Tony loses and the woman he hires to wear her clothes. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s piano score moves through the film like breath.

Now returning to screens in a stunning 4K remaster — 21 years after its original release — the film has been restored under the supervision of cinematographer Hiroshi Hirokawa, with painstaking color grading to preserve Ichikawa’s signature palette: that near-colorless world where grey holds entire emotional registers. The original sound has been remastered by recordist Yasuo Hashimoto.

Winner of three prizes at the 57th Locarno International Film Festival, including the Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize.
