「何度も、読み返される本を。」を目標に掲げ、東京・吉祥寺でひとり出版社・夏葉社を営む島田潤一郎さん。編集から経理、発送まですべてを一人でこなし、15年にわたり静かに本をつくり続けてきた。大学時代に小説コンクールで一位を獲るも作家の道を断念し、就職先でも思うようにいかない日々。しかし、故郷・高知の従兄の死をきっかけに、一編の詩を自ら出版しようと決意する。それが夏葉社を代表する『さよならのあとで』となった。580日間の密着取材を通じて、本を愛し、本屋を愛し、そこに集う人々に恩返しをしたいと願う島田さんの姿を追う。監督の田野隆太郎もまた「ひとり映画社」として製作から配給まで一人で手がけ、大都市からの配給ルートとは距離を置き、各地の本屋や映画館に”焚き火のように”映画を届け続けている。

Shimada Junichiro runs Natsuhasha, a one-person publishing house in Kichijoji, Tokyo. For over fifteen years he has handled everything alone — editing, accounting, shipping — guided by a single conviction: to make books that people return to again and again. As a young man he won a fiction prize but gave up on becoming a novelist; the jobs that followed never quite fit. Then the death of a beloved cousin in Kochi changed the course of his life. Moved by a poem that carried him through his grief, Shimada decided to publish it himself and give it to his cousin’s parents. That book became After the Goodbye, the title that would come to define Natsuhasha. Over 580 days, this documentary follows Shimada as he travels from bookshop to bookshop, building quiet trust with independent booksellers across Japan. Director Tano Ryutaro, himself a one-person film operation — producing, shooting, editing, and distributing entirely on his own — releases the film not through major cities first, but like a bonfire, lighting small fires in the towns where the bookshops are.
